The Baba Novac Interpretation

A later popular interpretation associates the name with Baba Novac, a commander of Michael the Brave. According to this telling, his name was so feared by enemies south of the country that, over time, it came to evoke a spirit that frightened disobedient children.

Baba Novac: “Feared by enemies, the guardian of children.” This proposed connection belongs to modern popular storytelling and is not established by standard linguistic sources.
